This poster was developed by East London Research School as part of their work to prioritise the development of communication and language. It has the overarching aim of listening to children and having conversations with them.
The ShREC Approach is a set of evidence-informed strategies that support educators to have brain building back-and-forth interactions in everyday practice. The poster includes the powerful prompts of ‘comment more, question less’ and the ‘10 second rule’. These are weaved through the ShREC Approach. The poster also includes interactive reading as a pivotal way to practice the strategies. There is a strong body of evidence that suggests if there is one thing you are going to do to support children’s communication and language – it should be interactive reading!
This poster forms part of the sustained programme of professional development designed and delivered by ELRS – The Early Years Conversation Project. It provides an accessible and memorable cue for educators who are focusing on developing the quality of their interactions.
Importantly this poster also highlights the inclusive nature of the SHREC approach - these strategies can be used with all children no matter how they communicate.
This poster represents years of work as we have co-constructed, designed and delivered training around supporting communication and language.
Watch out for further developments as we continue to innovate and co-construct evidence-informed teaching tools that can be used every day.
Get in touch with East London Research School and A Brighter Start SPH if you would like to find out more and take part in professional development around the ShREC Approach.
