Short Sparks from the HEART: Physical Development

This 'Short Sparks' session focuses on the prime area of Physical Development in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), highlighting its importance in building gross and fine motor skills for children up to five years old.

The speakers shared their journey of redesigning an outdoor play area in Alum Rock, Birmingham, using reclaimed and free resources to support children's physical development. The initiative was a response to the lack of safe green spaces for play in the community, which has high levels of income deprivation and lower-than-average physical development levels.

Evidence-informed practices for physical development are discussed, such as activities to enhance fine motor skills, active outdoor play, and integrating physical development with other early years activities.
