Blagdon Nursery School: the environment as a second teacher

Blagdon is the lead partner in the Thames Valley Hub.  It's part of the REYS Federation of Nursery Schools and aims to provide its children with a broad, rich and exciting range of experiences which are fun, rewarding and challenging.

The children at Blagdon have the opportunity to explore a whole range of activities, such as mark making, sand/water, role play, construction, small world, creative activities and mathematical activities.  They also spend lots of time outdoors, where they can develop their gross motor skills as well as developing an interest in the natural world.  The outside areas as much a part of the learning environment as the inside areas and the children can explore the Mud Kitchen, water play, large scale construction, mark making shed, maths shed and reading areas.  Many recent changes have happened, such as establishing 2 resource bases for children with additional learning needs, and the learning environment is subject to ongoing improvements.

At this open day, Jo Budge (Exec Headteacher) and her team will share how careful organisation and planning, and the right amount of challenge for each age group, means that the environment can become totally absorbing for the children, creating independence and acting as an "additional teacher" in the team.  We are sure you'll find much that's inspiring and that you'll be able to take lots of ideas back to your own settings!
