In this blog series, we’ve been exploring what children need before phonics. The first part unpacked phonological awareness, and the second part examined the foundational “bottom-of-the-iceberg” skills that come before it. This third instalment focuses on the next stage: children’s ability to symbolise and their understanding of the functions and forms of print.
