Long term studies have found that early speech, language and communication difficulties can predict later outcomes. Children who struggle with language at age 5 are 6 times less likely to reach the expected standard in English at age 11 than children who had good language skills at age 5 and 10 times less likely to achieve the expected level in Maths. Presented by maths consultant, Nathan Crook, this webinar will explore ways in which talk‑rich maths experiences can be provided to children - through which their mathematical understanding can be deepened so learners grow in confidence. To inform the sessions, the "Talk for Maths Benchmarks" publication (written by OUP with Voice 21) guidance will be connected to recommendations made.

About Nathan Crook: Prior to becoming a maths consultant, Nathan was a primary teacher and Maths Specialist Teacher (MaST). More recently, he's worked both in-person and remotely as an NCETM accredited independent maths consultant to support schools across the country in delivering high quality teaching and learning. As well as providing training, he has continued to work alongside classes and groups of children, as well as their teachers and support staff, to explore how they learn best. Nathan currently works with a number of organisations, Multi Academy Trusts (MATs), individual schools and Maths Hubs across the country. As part of his work with Maths Hubs, he networks as a Local Leader of Maths Education (LLME).
