Haltwhistle Open Settings Network: The Foundations of Writing

At Haltwhistle Primary Academy, we empower every child to become confident writers through our rich, research based curriculum and evidence-informed practice.

By embedding structured routines that build essential gross and fine motor skills - such as targeted core stability work, dynamic postural control and pencil-grip development - we ensure pupils lay the physical foundations required to become writers.

We nurture early mark-making and oral composition through purposefully designed provision, where children explore language, enact narratives and apply vocabulary in real-world contexts. This child-led exploration is paired with clear, explicit directed writing time, to build confidence in writing phonetically matched words, phrases then sentences.

As part of the open settings network, we look forward to collaborating, opening our doors and sharing our practical insights and provision with colleagues across the North East.
