“The Maths Champions programme sounded too good to be true” - Starting my journey as a Maths Champion.

When our headteacher suggested the Maths Champions programme, it sounded too good to be true. It felt like exactly what I needed!

As a newly appointed maths lead in our nursery, I was looking for something that would support and guide me in developing maths across the whole setting. I knew we needed to look afresh at our understanding and approach though I didn't feel confident about how to do this.

The programme sounded clear, accessible and, importantly, supportive. Just what I needed.

Even at this early stage, it is changing our understanding and practice

We are just a quarter of the way through the programme, but I can truly say that my experience has been entirely positive.

I already feel more confident about trying out new practices. They are unbelievably simple, yet effective and fun. Before this programme I didn’t realise that some of the activities would be considered to be teaching maths!

Maths Champions has opened (and continues to open) my eyes to maths as an enjoyable, meaningful and achievable area of the curriculum.

So far, I have benefitted from

  • a thoughtfully designed programme that is remarkably flexible, making it easy to fit into our busy working schedule.
  • support and guidance at every step, including an online platform that is always accessible.
  • a range of practical, straightforward resources that are easy to implement. This includes templates that can be adapted to a range of settings.
  • presentations that help me to introduce the programme to the wider team.
  • regular catchups with a mentor - this helps to keep things on track and provides me with valuable opportunities to ask questions along the way.

Looking ahead

The course has already helped me identify areas where we are performing well, while also highlighting aspects we need to develop further. What more could I ask at this early stage?

We have 75% of the programme ahead of us –that feels incredibly inspiring.
