Case Study: Beyond Scribbles - Inspiring Meaningful Mathematical Mark Making
By Dr Lucy Parker – Lucy is Deputy Headteacher at Ludwick Nursery School and is a maths PD lead. Ludwick Nursery School is the Hertfordshire partner for Reachout Stronger Practice Hub.
A case study discussing mathematical mark making:
Mathematical mark making can sometimes be missed in early years settings. We often focus our time on teaching the practical side of maths and forget how to support children with developing their ideas through mark making. As children’s mathematical understanding develops, practitioners need to provide opportunities for them to represent their ideas and thinking through drawing and symbols ( EEF 2020, p.20).
This blog draws upon strand three of the ‘Improving Mathematics in the early years and key stage 1 guidance’ from the EEF, and shares how to use manipulatives and representations to develop mathematical understanding in nursery.
