What Comes Before Phonics?

Part 1 of a three-part quick-read series about phonological awareness from Fiona Greenwood.

Before children can decode words, they must first learn to hear them.

This first instalment explores the essential foundations of phonological awareness — the listening, speaking and sound-play skills that support early reading success. Learn why rhyme, rhythm, syllables and oral blending matter long before letters are introduced, and how everyday interactions, songs and stories help build the language base children need for phonics.

A concise, practical read for busy Early Years practitioners.

Because phonics doesn’t start with print — it starts with sound!
