Using Schema Theory to Help Practitioners Understand the Conceptual Development of Mathematics

Children who don’t have high quality first hand play experiences do less well in mathematics at the end of reception than their peers who have been supported to explore investigate and learn through their play. This programme provides participants with the underpinning knowledge of Schema Theory and how it leads to the conceptual development of mathematics. Drawing on this knowledge, participants can observe children’s play to identify key patterns, make links to their conceptual development and ultimately, plan appropriate opportunities to stretch and challenge children’s mathematical development.

The programme has been designed by drawing on high-quality evidence and the expertise of the team at The Pen Green Centre.
